Validation and psychometric properties of the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale in Hungary

Abstract
Introduction: The Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES 8A) is a questionnaire that was developed by Miller and Tonigan (1996) and designed to assess readiness for change in alcohol abusers. It contains 19 Likert-type items measuring three dimensions called Recognition, Ambivalence, and Taking Steps. The SOCRATES questionnaire has been adapted and validated in several countries over the past decades. It can be used in various populations and settings without permission.
Aims: As this instrument has not been previously translated into Hungarian and adapted for Hungarian populations, our aim was to collect data from different clinical and non-clinical populations of alcohol users, to check the psychometric properties of the questionnaire, and to validate it on Hungarian samples.
Methods: Data were collected from the clinical population of St. John's Hospital, Budapest, and from the non-clinical population using an online questionnaire and a snowball sampling method. We examined the factor structure and psychometric properties of the adapted scale and its congruent validity with different constructs such as craving, risky or hazardous consumption, or any alcohol use disorder and well-being, anxiety, and depressed mood.
Result: In our oral presentation, we introduce the factor structure, the internal reliability of the Hungarian version of SOCRATES 8A, and some associations with sociodemographic characteristics and some convergent constructs. We compare our results with those of some important international adaptations.
Conclusion: Based on our results, we argue the potential of the SOCRATES 8A questionnaire to assess Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness in clinical and non-clinical populations.
