Digital technologies in dental education and clinical practice
Abstract – Oral presentation
Introduction:
Digital technologies are increasingly integrated into dental education and clinical practice, offering new possibilities for both teaching and material manufacturing. However, their effectiveness compared to traditional methods remains to be clarified.
Aims:
Our aim was to investigate digital tools in dental education and clinical practice. We aimed to determine whether, with the help of digital tools and technologies, we can achieve results that are equal to or better than those obtained with traditional methods.
Methods:
Preclinical crown preparations were performed by dental students using either traditional methods or a digital self-evaluation system. Preparation accuracy and feedback frequency were analyzed.
In parallel, PMMA denture base materials produced by conventional, milled, and 3D-printing technologies were investigated. Mechanical properties, including flexural strength, hardness, and impact resistance, were measured. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate parametric and non-parametric tests.
Results:
No significant differences were found in preparation accuracy between traditional and digital methods, although digital tools enabled less frequent feedback.
Mechanical testing showed that digitally manufactured materials exhibited comparable flexural properties and, in some cases, higher hardness, while conventional materials demonstrated superior impact resistance.
Conclusion:
Digital tools and technologies can provide outcomes comparable to traditional methods in both dental education and material performance, with certain advantages depending on the application.
